EPISTVLA I第一封信Letter 1
De nomine关于这个名字On the name

This site is called vindibi. The name comes from the opening of Seneca’s first letter to Lucilius: Vindica te tibi.
Compress the phrase to VIND[ICA TE T]IBI, and a few letters fall out of the middle; what remains is vindibi. In the same sentence Seneca writes that our time is either taken from us, stolen, or simply slips away (excidebat). Excidere means, quite literally, to fall out.
Vindicare was a word of Roman law: to claim something as rightfully your own. So vindica te tibi is closer to “claim yourself back”. The whole letter comes down to one line: Omnia, Lucili, aliena sunt, tempus tantum nostrum est. Everything, Lucilius, belongs to others; time alone is ours.
So this site tries not to take up your time. No pop-ups, no tracking; it opens straight onto the text. Its light follows your local hour and dims after dark, like reading a letter by lamplight. It uses a single color, cinnabar, which Pliny the Elder says was used for writing in books and to make letters stand out on walls, on marble, and even on tombs.
From now on I will write letters here, and keep some papers here too.
Vale.珍重。Farewell.
